ABOUT
AYO
Ms.
Ayo Sharpe-Mouzon, an African dancer, singer, poet and writer has directed
African dance companies throughout California and in Arkansas. She directed Alkebulan
Theatre in San Diego, CA (1974). Alkebulan
Theatre was the first African American dance company to perform at the San
Diego Wild Animal Park.
At that time, she also had numerous contracts
with the San Diego Zoological Society and ongoing classes at the YWCA,
San Diego (1973-1976). Ayo's first teacher was Ms. Tabula Adigun in Los Angeles at
the Malcolm X Center (1971).
In 1976, Ayo went back to the place of her birth, Little Rock, Arkansas, and
developed Alkebulan Theatre, as an African dance and reader's theatre
company at Shorter College. She was a member of Koumpo West African Dance
Company in San Diego (1978), for two years. In 1980, Ayo moved to Los
Angeles and become involved in the dynamic cultural arts scene that revolved
around the Leimert Park area. She taught ongoing classes at the Elegant
Manor, a historic landmark owned by Mrs. Moody (1985-1989). Ayo formed Whole
Tribe African Dancers and Drummers (1990-1997) at Bethel A.M.E. Church, Los
Angeles. Mrs. Jennifer George Alford, was the Founder and Mrs. Domingo
Rambo was the Senior Advisor for Whole Tribe, & President of L.A. Bridge
Conservatory of Performing and Visual Arts. Ms. Fahamisha Thompson-McMillon
& Ms. Karol Ababa, along with Ayo, were principal dancers.
Ayo was an English major and drama minor in college. At Lincoln High School in
Camden, AR., Ayo was a National Honor Society Scholar. She then attended
Philander Smith College in Little Rock, AR: Arkansas State University,
Jonesboro, AR: and the
University of Southern California (USC), Los Angeles, CA.
